The hot flashes and night sweats of menopause don’t play out the very same for every one of women, brand-new research shows.
Almost 80 percent of women do get hold of hot flashes, night sweats or the 2 throughout menopause, the researchers found. However the timing of these symptoms and exactly how long they last appear to vary a wonderful deal, along with factors such as physique weight, race, education and dietary habits tending to predict the patterns.

“We used to believe these symptoms lasted from 3 to 5 years, ideal about the moment of the last menstrual period,” said senior study author Rebecca Thurston. She is director of the Women’s Biobehavioral Good health Lab at the University of Pittsburgh.
“We now understand that these symptoms persist for much longer — usually seven to 10 years — and occur at various times for various women,” she added.
Thurston’s group followed nearly 1,500 women as they transitioned through menopause, tracking them for a median of 15 years. Each year, the women reported their symptoms. Four teams of symptom patterns emerged.
The patterns included: early symptom onset, start 11 years prior to the last menstrual period and declining after menopause; onset of symptoms near the last period along with a later decline; early onset along with higher frequency of symptoms; and persistently reduced frequency of symptoms.
When the researchers looked a lot more closely, they discovered that factors such as race, education, weight and Good health habits played a role in the patterns.
For example, Chinese women were much less most likely to have actually symptoms throughout the transition period, the investigators found. Less-educated women and those that drank alcohol moderately or heavily were a lot more most likely to have actually symptoms longer, as were black women and those that reported depression or anxiety.
Women that were over weight were a lot more most likely to have actually early onset of symptoms, in the decade prior to periods stop, compared to others. So, too, were depressed or anxious women, the findings showed.
Women along with a reduced physique mass index (a measurement based on weight and height), those that smoked and black women were every one of a lot more most likely compared to others to have actually symptoms occur later that declined gradually in the adhering to decade, the researchers said.
The findings must create a lot more research regarding the induces of hot flashes and night sweats, Thurston said.
The patterns aren’t tough and fast, she noted, and are just associations, not cause-and-effect relationships.
Thurston hasn’t studied whether changing some factors, such as dropping weight or quitting smoking, could help. “We’re looking at that now,” she said.
Mary Sammel is director of biostatistics for the Women’s Good health Clinical Research Focus at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She suggested that the findings could recommendations women understand exactly what to anticipate in general. This could perhaps recommendations them make decisions regarding whether they may take hormone therapy for a short time.
“The patterns are a lot more varied compared to we thought,” Sammel said. However not all the predictors were a surprise, she noted.
“There are points we understand are associated along with hot flashes, enjoy smoking and physique mass index, as well,” Sammel added.
The study was published in the July issue of Menopause: The Diary of the North American Menopause Society. The U.S. National Institutes of Good health funded the study.
